Halkidiki Ammouliani

Who said that Halkidiki is the mainland-"island" of Greece? In the small bay of Toroneos, on the north-west of Mount Athos, there is a tiny, and the only inhabited island of Halkidiki, Ammouliani. With only 2 kilometers width and 2.5 length, Ammouliani can practically be walked from one side to the other in less than one hour. The small village-capital of the island, easily reached from the village of Tripiti, right opposite Ammouliani, on the third peninsula of Halkidiki. It only takes 15 minutes to cross the sea and the routes are more than frequent.

The island of Ammouliani is ideal for relaxation, while, the small capital town has to offer everything you need. A lot of fresh food, traditional houses, and a smell of flowers everywhere. Until the recent past, the island was not provided with water and, since they connected water supply, the inhabitants adore to growwhat they mostly missed...

Do not miss to take one of those small boats and go to the surrounding, even smaller islands of Drenia (the biggest is less than 600m long). If you have your own boat, you will be able to visit every single beach, not accessible from the island. The most popular beach of Ammouliani is Alykes, while there is an organised camping on the island.

Transportation in Halkidiki

The easiest way to explore Halkidiki is by renting a car. This is the best way to explore Halkidiki's small villages, beaches, mountains, and local festivals. You can find car rentals, apart from the airport Macedonia (Makedonia) of Thessaloniki, also in Kalithea (peninsula of Kassandra), Nea Moudania (56 klm from Thessaloniki), Ouranoupolis (third peninsula of Mount Athos).

However, there is also an extensive network of buses, mainly starting from Thessaloniki (KTEL Halkidikis) and very frequent routes, especially during high season. You can reserve seats online, or by calling at +30 2310 316555, +30 2310 316565.

Armenistis camping in Sithonia is an organised camping, on the second peninsula of Halkidiki, just a few kilometers in the south of the village of Vourvourou, facing mount Athos. The camping itself offers everything you may want: Spacious places to leave your tent, bar, restaurant, super market, doctor, and, of course, an organised beach. Although the camping, especially between 15th of July and 15th of August is packed with people, the sea always remains so clear and green, you think you are on a tropical island. Armenistis is the ideal solution for those seeking something cheap and organised, and a perfect spot to begin the discovery of Sithonia, and its fantastic beaches.

Athitos or Afitos (Άθυτος) is one of the most picturesque village in Halkidiki. It is at the first peninsula of Kassandra, and very different to anything else around it. The village has its own architectural style, with old-stone built houses, coming straight from previous centuries. You will adore to stroll on the stone paved alleys, smell the flowers that the inhabitants adore to use everywhere, and sit and relax at one of the traditional taverns of the place. The village is built high above the sea, offering a fantastic view to the Toroneos Gulf, overlooking the peninsula of Sithonia. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting at one of the cafes and let your eyes spread over this view. As for the sea, Athitos has two organised beaches, with green waters and relaxing beach bars.

Athitos has enough hotels and rooms for rent, but, of course, you are advised to make your booking in advance (especially betweem 15 of July and 15 of August). Athitos is not the place for loud and 24h night life. In fact, the place is more romantic than a typical night life spot in summer halkidiki. However, Athitos (Afytos) is only 3klms away from Kalithea, the centre of clubbing of Halkidiki, and, (why not??) the whole of northern Greece during summer days.

Halkidiki Nea Potidea

Nea Potidea is, probably, at the best position of Halkidiki in order to explore the whole region. It was built at the entrance of the first peninula, thus, it provides easy access to the first and second peninsula (Kassandra and Sithonia), as well as the main part of Halkidiki (it is only 9 klm away from Nea Moudania, the major town of the area), and 67klm from Thessaloniki. However, the place on its own is a place to stay and discover. Indicative are the numbers of hotels and appartments of the town, and the number of tourists that choose Potidea for their holidays. Thanks to its strategic position, Potidea was developed since the ancient years. It used to be a Corinthean colony since the 7th century BC and had very good trading relations with many major ports in the ancient world. The town of Potidea is washed from the sea both from the west and the east, and a canal is connecting the two gulfs, while a bridge offers access to the rest of the mainland. Crossing the bridge is a small experience itself, as the view is fantastic.

Thanks to this, you can choose among many beaches, either on the east, or the west. If you are looking for non-organised beaches, starting from Potidea (under the bridge), and heading towards Agios Mamas on the East, a huge coastline of a sandy beach lays along a 10 klm length.

Halkidiki Kavourotripes

This uncomparable beach is on the second peninsula of Halkidiki, close to the village of Sarti. Although it is a hidden paradise, it has become very popular to the people of Thessaloniki lately. However, in June or September and during weekdays in July and August it is still quite OK.

The place is a paradise. For many people, it is maybe one of the best beaches. Pine trees ending to the sea and white spherical rocks, forming tiny golfs that inspire isolation. The beach is nudist, especially the southern part of it. Although free camping is not allowed, you can find some tents under the pine trees. If you love beautiful beaches, then you really must go to this place upon the next time you visit Halkidiki

Sithonia, the second leg of Halkidiki, is the paradise of nature, pine trees and amazing, tropical beaches. Although nudism is not officially allowed in Greece, there are quite a lot of nudist beaches, also in Halkidiki and, more specifically, in the peninsula of Sithonia.

Halkidiki Kalithea

Kalithea is the place to be if you are a club goer! This place, situated at a strategic position on the first peninsula, less than one hour far from Salonica, is the heart of fun. It is common for Thessalonians to drive to Kalithea just for clubbing during summer time. In the village, there are lots of bars, cafeterias, avernas, pizzerias, and, of course, beach bars and a very nice beach. The main part of the clubs, "noisy" as they are, is located one kilometer outside the village. It is a small town of clubs and bars, full of people and energy, every night.

Halkidiki Hanioti

Hanioti is one of the most visited villages of Halkidiki. It is much preferred by European tourists. Hanioti is a picturesque and really lively place. The small streets around the main village square are full of apartments to let and very good quality hotel for any budget. The village has many restaurants and bars, ready to satisfy any taste. Just 5 minutes walk from the main square is a big park, ending to the beach. A great sea, beach bars and sea games are all there, while the place is very much preferred by greek young people as well.

The village is only 1 hour from Thessaloniki, and less than 1 hour from Thessaloniki's Macedonia International Airport. It is at the first peninsula of Halkidiki and a very good spot to start exploring the area.
